Chronic conditions
The risk of many diabetes complications can be reduced through regular follow-up, adherence to the treatment plan and daily habits suited to your condition.
Habits that make a difference
Start with one change a week instead of changing everything at once:
- Check your blood sugar at fixed times and log the readings
- Walk for 30 minutes on most days of the week
- Cut back on sweetened drinks and packaged juices
- Follow a food plan tailored to your condition by your doctor or dietitian
- Get at least 7 hours of sleep
- Check your feet daily
- Have your HbA1c checked when your doctor advises, often every 3 to 6 months depending on your level of control
When should you see a doctor?
If your readings repeatedly rise above the target agreed with your doctor, or you feel dizzy, very thirsty or notice numbness in your hands or feet, book an appointment in the family medicine and internal medicine clinic without delay.
