A fever in children is usually a sign the body is fighting off a mild infection, but there are warning signs that shouldn't be ignored.

Signs that call for the ER right away

Go to the 24-hour emergency department if any of these signs appear:

  • A baby under 3 months old with any fever
  • Seizures, or severe limpness and lethargy
  • Difficulty breathing or bluish lips
  • A rash that doesn't fade when pressed
  • Refusing to drink along with signs of dehydration

Home care

Offer enough fluids and dress your child lightly. If using a fever reducer, follow the age- and weight-based label directions or instructions from a doctor or pharmacist, and never give aspirin to children. A baby under 3 months with a fever needs urgent medical assessment.
